The Dominican Media Mission which has completed half a decade was inspired by St. John Paul II. From its origin as a pet project of Fr. Roger Godinho with its humble beginnings in Goa, the Media Mission has grown much. The motto “To evangelize the Virtual World” encapsulates the aim of Media Mission which is to evangelize the logged-in generation by using all necessary means. Initially, the emphasis of the Media Mission was to reach out to young people and bring them closer to God and Church. The Media Mission preached to them through music, drama, short films, videos, etc.
The establishment of a studio at Orlim, Goa which was handed over to the Provincial Promoter of Communication in 2014 was a shot in the arm for the media mission. The later media productions were aimed, in addition to the youth, the whole Catholic community. The Media Mission came out with preaching on topics like unity in the family, abortion, youth issues, etc. The recently launched “Gospel Today” is a big step by the Media Mission. The program aims at airing short reflections on the Gospel of the day through WhatsApp and YouTube. Gospel Today which has crossed 1400 installments has been a boon to the viewers and the brothers. The people who cannot attend daily mass are given the opportunity to hear and reflect on the Word of God through this program. The brothers in formation get a firsthand experience in preaching through Gospel Today.
In addition to evangelizing the internet world, the Dominican Media Mission has been involved in the production of 3 musical albums, 3 documentaries, and a couple of cine-dramas. Plans are underway to install a state of the art audio recording facilities in the studio so that preaching by means of musical videos, short films can be taken up with improved vigour and rigour. New initiatives that involve more groups like Dominican Sisters and Dominican Laity are also being considered by Media Mission so that a centre for media studies can be established in the near future.
The call to be a Dominican is to be an itinerant preacher who sets the whole world on fire with the Word of God. What the Media Mission aims to do is exactly this, to spread the flame of Dominic throughout the world. The very emblem of the media mission proclaims this. The dog with a torch in its mouth is the symbol of Dominic. According to tradition, Bl. Jane of Aza, mother of St Dominic, had a dream before her son’s conception in which she saw a hound racing through the world igniting everything with a flaming torch. This dream was indeed prophetic. Dominic did ignite the world with sacred truth through preaching and teaching born from a life of dedicated prayer, love for the WORD of GOD, and a burning desire to gain souls for Christ. Now the dog in the emblem that goes across the globe is the Dominican messenger who preaches to the whole of humanity wherever they may be, and the aim of the Dominican Media Mission is to spread the flame of Dominic throughout the world (both in the real world and virtual world) – TO SET THE WHOLE WORLD ON FIRE WITH THE WORD OF GOD.
Under the able leadership of Fr. Sunil Jose, OP who has introduced programs like Gospel Today, the Media Mission is growing fast and is catching up with time. With a vision to cater to the Hindi speaking viewers, fr. Joachim Lakra OP introduced regular Hindi programs like Dainik Aahaar (Daily Bread) & Jeewan Sandesh (Word of Life). Gradually, a separate Hindi YouTube channel ‘Satya ki Mashaal [DMM]’ was begun.
What we need now is support and generosity from the people. The Media Mission would like you all to patronize it by subscribing to our YouTube channels ‘Dominican Media Mission’ and ‘Satya ki Mashaal [DMM]’; and by viewing and commenting on the initiatives like Gospel Today, Sunday Reach, Dainik Aahaar, and Jeewan Sandesh.
